Federal Work-Study Program

The Federal Work-Study (FWS) Program provides part-time employment opportunities for eligible students with financial need. Students can gain valuable work experience while earning money to help with educational and living expenses. Positions may be available on or off campus; however, funding and jobs are limited.

Eligibility

IVC considers the following when determining Federal Work-Study eligibility:

• The date the student’s financial aid file was completed
• Demonstrated unmet financial need
• Enrollment in at least six units of coursework required for the student’s program of study
• Maintaining Satisfactory Academic Progress (passing your classes and moving towards your goal)
• The applicant must be 18 years of age or older

Students must continue meeting all financial aid, enrollment, academic progress, and employment requirements throughout their participation in the program.

Accepting a Federal Work-Study Offer

If you are eligible for Federal Work-Study, you will receive an offer. If you would like to pursue a Work-Study position:

1. Accept the Work-Study award offered on WebSTAR
2. Check your IVC student email for instructions about applying for available positions.

Important: Students are responsible for finding and applying for a Work-Study position. Accepting a Federal Work-Study offer does not guarantee employment. Returning Work-Study students must complete these steps each academic year and are not guaranteed the same position.

After You Are Hired

If you are hired, you must complete the required employment packet and satisfy all employment and financial aid requirements before beginning work. Do not begin working until you have received authorization to do so.

Federal Work-Study students:

• Are paid by the hour
• May work only the number of hours authorized under their award
• Must accurately record and submit their hours on a monthly timecard
• Are paid once a month for hours worked during the previous month
• Must not work during their scheduled class hours
• Must follow all workplace policies and supervisor instructions

Your Federal Work-Study employment will end when any of the following occurs:

• You earn the full amount of your Federal Work-Study award.
• The spring semester ends.
• Federal Work Study funds are exhausted
• You no longer meet the program’s financial aid, enrollment, academic progress, or employment requirements.

Federal Work-Study students are expected to follow the same workplace rules and responsibilities as other employees. They are also protected by applicable employment laws, including the Fair Labor Standards Act.

CalWORKs Work-Study Program

Eligible CalWORKs students may participate in the CalWORKs Work-Study Program. The program provides temporary, subsidized employment opportunities that allow students to gain work experience, develop professional skills, and earn additional income while meeting applicable CalWORKs requirements.

CalWORKs Work-Study can help students::

• Gain practical work experience and develop job-related skills
• Practice professional ethic habits, including punctuality, dependability, and responsibility
• Earn wages without reducing their monthly CalWORKs cash-aid amount, subject to applicable program rules
• Apply eligible work hours toward their Welfare-to-Work participation requirements

CalWORKs Work-Study positions are temporary and are not guaranteed to continue into the following semester. Participation in one semester does not guarantee future employment or placement in the same position.
