On Thursday, October 17, at 10:17 a.m., Imperial Valley College will join other colleges, businesses, and organizations
by participating in the "DROP, COVER, AND HOLD ON" safety action. The Great ShakeOut drill is an opportunity to practice protecting
yourself during an earthquake. Federal, state, and emergency preparedness experts
agree that "Drop, Cover, and Hold On" is the appropriate action to reduce injury and
death during an earthquake.
When the drill begins, you will be alerted to the sound of the fire alarm and via
our Regroup Mass Notification System (text and email). When you receive the notification,
Drop, Cover, and Hold On.
1. DROP
Drop to the floor, avoiding any falling objects or furniture.
2. COVER
Take cover under a desk, table, or other sturdy pieces of furniture. If no such furniture
is present, seek cover against an interior wall while protecting your head with your
arms.
3. HOLD ON
If you take cover under furniture, hold on as if a major earthquake were happening
(stay down for at least 60 seconds).
After you have "Drop, Cover, and Hold On" for 60 seconds, please evacuate to your
assigned Emergency Evacuation Area based on where you are and in accordance with the
Campus Evacuation Map.
Take all personal belongings with you as you leave your classroom or office. Walk
safely and remain at your Emergency Evacuation location until you are given further
direction. Do not re-enter the building until you get an all-clear notification from
authorized personnel. This is only a drill; you should not leave campus.
In addition, during this drill, a notification will be sent to the contact information
provided in your Regroup account. Notifications appear as text messages on subscribed
mobile phone numbers, telephone voice call, and emails sent to IVC email addresses. Students, staff, and faculty are encouraged
to register their mobile phone numbers with our Regroup Mass Notification System to
ensure they receive text alerts.
