President Dr. Lennor Johnson’s Board Report for April

4/23/2026

Highlighting a month of significant milestones for student housing, regional workforce development, and academic excellence, Imperial Valley College Superintendent/President Dr. Lennor M. Johnson presented his latest update to the Board of Trustees on April 15.

Dr. Johnson showcased a college in motion, transitioning from a successful special board retreat in late March to a flurry of spring events aimed at expanding opportunities for the Imperial Valley community.

A major focus of the update was the progress on student housing, a critical component of the college’s growth.

On March 31, IVC hosted a Student College Housing Forum to detail the upcoming joint housing community at the San Diego State University Imperial Valley campus in Calexico. Dr. Johnson emphasized the importance of these initiatives, noting that the college remains dedicated to removing barriers to education.

The report also highlighted IVC's leadership in regional industry, particularly in the emerging Lithium Force Training initiatives, which were recently featured by Michigan State University’s Workforce Development Institute. Recent workforce efforts also highlighted strong industry and student engagement across multiple events. On March 30, the LIFT Industry Showcase connected students directly with industry partners to explore careers in advanced manufacturing. Earlier that week, the Career Education Expo on March 26 welcomed 98 exhibitors and more than 1,300 attendees, from middle school students to adult learners, showcasing a wide range of local career pathways. Additionally, agriculture students expanded their industry exposure by attending the Southwest Ag Summit in Yuma, Arizona, this past February.

The college also celebrated individual and program achievements. Dr. Daniel Ortiz, associate dean of Nursing and Allied Health, received recognition from State Senator Steve Padilla during the El Movimiento Celebración in Brawley for his contributions to the community.

On campus, the “Game of Life” budgeting activity on April 1 provided roughly 100 students with hands-on financial literacy training in partnership with local banks. Additionally, the Admission and Recorders’ Evaluators Team confirmed the awarding of 105 degrees following the Winter 2026 session.

Reflecting on the collective effort of the faculty and staff, Dr. Johnson shared his optimism for the college's trajectory toward its Vision 2030 goals.

“Every day I see faculty, staff, and administrators working together to improve lives through education,” Dr. Johnson said. “Together, we are working together to take Imperial Valley College, and Imperial County, to new heights.”
